Lemon Lime

Here is Hosta ‘Lemon Lime’ after replanting.   While I was vole proofing the gardens I took the opportunity to move and divide several hosta.  Lemon Lime had been in the concrete garden – which is gone as of today – that had been overrun with evergreen tree roots.  The poor plants were gasping for air as the tree roots made thier way up and into the raised bed to suck every last drop of water out.

I purchased Lemon Lime in 2006 from Bridgewood Gardens.  I was looking for a low “groundcover” sort of hosta and I really loved Lemon Lime in the first year.  Last year I’m sure it suffered from the hidden invasion of tree roots in 2007 but now it’s moved into a brand new garden and buried in permatill for vole protection.  It’s a VERY SMALL hosta so a two inch layer of permatill for vole protection is a bit of a pipe dream.

Lakeside Love Affaire

Lakeside Love Affaire is a beautiful hosta with an amazing multicolored leaf.  It’s a large sized hosta with a romantic white center lovingly bordered by two shades of green.  This upright, lolling mound has been a slow grower for me but as you can see, the leaves themselves are large despite still having only one eye.

There are very few plants that have taken my breath away when I have seen them in person for the first time. This is one of them. It looked amazing in photos and even more amazing in person. The leaf looks handpainted like an impressionist work of art. Stunning. As long as it grows well, it will be one of my favorites for certain.

Lakeside Coal Miner

This is the first good year for this one. Still isn’t getting the dark green “coal miner” color but it’s still early in the spring and the berry tree above isn’t fully leafed out for shade. I got Lakeside Coal Miner in 2006 and this is really – honestly – the first year this plant has even been worth photographing and it’s only early May. Maybe he will eventually come into his own?
