Ice Age Trail

My Hosta ‘Ice Age Trail’ epitomizes the joy and frustration with hosta that many people struggle with.  In July, 2006 I placed a special order from the Hosta Farm – the very first time I’ve placed an order with this company – specifically to get Ice Age Trail.  The plants arrived bareroot and healthy, in great condition.  Ice Age Trail was young and small so I debated about where to put him.  I wanted to make sure he was safe and secure until he had put on a few pounds.  I decided to set him temporarily in a well worked bed with a lot of shade rather than starting him in one of the new beds with more sun.  It was July after all.

So I set him down with another plant and stepped over the dog fence into the garden.  Suddenly Megan, one of my insane dogs, comes running up out of nowhere, grabs the little plant in her mouth and goes running off!  I have never run so fast as I ran after that damn dog.  Of course she grabs the one plant that was the reason I placed this whole order!  Needless to say she was a bit surprised at me running and screaming so she dropped the plant on one of the paths and ran off.  Ice Age Trail was planted in the ground successfully.

Skip to 2007 and the creation of the Berry Garden.  I moved Ice Age Trail over to the Berry Garden which seemed like the most perfect location.  The leaves went from young and thin to thick and mature with elegant coloring and lovely crinkles.  I took one of my most favorite hosta photos from 2007 of this plant.  Simply stunning.

Jump forward again to 2008.  Now I’m thinking this is going to be an amazing year for this plant – I can’t wait!  Think again, smartypants!  What I’ve got this year is either frost damage or eaten by animals.  Yeah, I’ve got squat.  I’ll post the beautiful photo from last year and if anything photographic in nature appears this year, I’ll share.
