Blue Mouse Ears

Hosta ‘Blue Mouse Ears’ is just about the cutest hosta there is.  Can you think of a cuter plant?  Blue Mouse Ears might be a sport of Blue Cadet but it’s unlike any other hosta you will find.  It has a super thick leaf and petiole with a good waxy coating and powder blue color.

I purchased my Blue Mouse Ears from Bridgewood Gardens in 2006.  Here it is from late in that year looking a little roughed up:

Blue Mouse Ears is one of only two plants that seemed to increase despite the competition from tree roots that developed in the concrete garden.  Today I took the opportunity to divide BME when I moved him to a new bed.  One BME is now three – giving it more of a chance at survival against the voles.  The first pic in the post was one division, here are the other two:

Bridal Veil

Bridal Veil moved in May 2008 to the Berry Garden.  Much larger than last year it looks a little frazzled from the move!

Bridal Veil

Hosta ‘Bridal Veil’ is a stunning plant that looks like an elegant mop.  The green leaves are long, cascading down with a slightly wavy white edge.  I believe I purchased my plant in 2006 from Hallson Gardens and you can’t ask for a nicer plant than you will get from them.  They ship large plants, bareroot with tons of growth – big, fat, happy plants.  Currently Bridal Veil is in a holding area while I create the new Cherry Garden.  I’m sure this plant will look good wherever I stick her.

Blue Cadet

After a spate of buying speckles and streaks I realized a few clean deep blues would be the perfect colors to offset some of the shiny superstars.  I liked the fact tat this one was promoted as a “fast grower” and noted as “multiplies quickly” as I think it will make an incredible understory plant for an upright grower.

Blue Cadet is a small hosta with a blue to blue green leaf.  It creates a small, neat mound and is a Tokudama hybrid.  I purchased mine in 2006 from Bridgewood Gardens.

Big Daddy

Paul and I were doing a weekly walkthrough of Dambly’s in late spring 2006. He had picked out two daylillies (Cranberry Baby and Bela Lugosi) and I pointed out that if we found a third plant we could get a fourth for free.  Who would pass up such a deal?? Of course I wandered back to the Hosta and Paul laid claim to Big Daddy as his namesake. “Of course I have to get this one. See, I like Hosta too,” he challenged. The plant was beautiful and doing well. He then chose a fat and happy Carnival with giant buds about to bloom as our freebie.

The plant marker made for Big Daddy is a beaded bell pot on copper pipe with copper wire. It should be hidden once the plant matures. Big Daddy is located at the back of the property, next to the shed.

Fast forward to 2007 and the creation of the Berry Garden.  I moved Big Daddy there where it is now a focal point of the garden.  This plant is simply beautiful.  Big Daddy is a very large, blue hosta that I acquired from Dambly’s Garden Center.  The rounded leaf is thick and puckered with a blue/grey waxy coating.
